We can all find ourselves overwhelmed by work, finances, and family responsibilities at times so managing stress is a crucial skill we all need to learn.  We need to be able to cope with all that life can throw at us, and give ourselves the best chance to thrive rather than just survive!

I realised the importance of managing stress during the lockdown. Like many, I found myself struggling with uncertainty and anxiety. I started by incorporating a 30-minute walk into my daily routine, which boosted my mood and energy levels and positively impacted my mental health. This simple act of daily movement became a cornerstone of my wellbeing. As I continued, I added more exercises to my routine, choosing activities that I enjoyed and that boosted my energy, calmed my stress, and brought me joy.  For example practicing yoga on days I felt particularly anxious helped enormously.

The Power of Yoga and Meditation

Yoga and meditation are powerful tools for managing stress combining physical movement, breath control, and mental focus to calm the mind and body. Practicing yoga releases tension from the body, increases flexibility, and promotes relaxation. Meditation helps quiet the mind, improve concentration, and foster a sense of inner peace.

Regular practice of yoga and meditation can lead to significant improvements in mental clarity and emotional resilience. By making these practices a part of your routine, you can better manage the stresses of daily life and enhance your overall sense of wellbeing.

The Importance of Screen-Free Time

Consider setting aside specific times each day to disconnect from digital devices and fully focus on other activities.

Screen time can be a significant source of stress. Constant exposure to screens can lead to eye strain, disrupted sleep, and increased anxiety. We all know how helpful it can be to switch our phones onto Do not disturb mode when focussing on a work task, so why not do the same when you go for a walk or sit down to read a book?  Consider setting aside specific times each day to disconnect from digital devices and fully focus on other activities.

Time in Nature

Spending time in nature is another effective way to manage stress. Nature has a calming effect on the mind and body, helping to reduce anxiety and improve mood. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a hike in the woods, or just walking barefoot in a garden, spending time outdoors can help you feel more grounded and refreshed.

Engaging in Activities You Love

Doing what you love is a natural stress reliever. Hobbies and activities that bring you joy can provide a much-needed break from daily pressures and help you recharge. Whether it’s painting, reading, playing a sport, or cooking, make time for things that make you happy.

Giving Back to Others

Helping others can also be a powerful way to manage stress. Acts of kindness and generosity can boost your mood, increase feelings of connection, and provide a sense of purpose. Volunteering, helping a neighbour, or simply being there for a friend can make a big difference in your stress levels and overall wellbeing.

How to Incorporate Stress-Reduction Activities

It can take as little as 10 minutes of your day to help you begin to cope with everyday stresses. Here are some simple practices you could start today:

  • Deep Breathing: Spend a few minutes each day practicing deep breathing exercises. This can help calm your mind and reduce stress.
  • Meditation: Set aside 10 minutes for meditation. Focus on your breath, a mantra, or simply observe your thoughts without judgment.
  • Yoga: Incorporate a short yoga session into your day. Even a few stretches can help release tension and promote relaxation.
